Rusty Metal Birds: Unique Garden Art & Décor
There’s something about rusty metal birds that feels completely at home in a garden. The warm, weathered tones of steel work naturally alongside timber, stone, trees and planting, while the simple bird silhouettes add character without overpowering the space.
At MetalGardenArt.co.uk, our metal birds are CNC plasma cut from premium 3mm mild steel in our Lancashire workshop and hand-finished before being supplied in bare steel. Once outdoors, the surface naturally begins to weather and develop its own rusty patina.
Rather than trying to prevent that change, we make it part of the design.
Why Do Our Metal Birds Go Rusty?
Our standard metal birds are intentionally supplied in bare mild steel.
Exposure to rain, moisture and the outdoor environment gradually changes the surface from clean steel through different shades of orange and brown, eventually creating the rustic appearance associated with weathered metal garden art.
Because the process happens naturally, the exact colour and pattern will vary from piece to piece. Position, weather and exposure all influence how the steel develops, giving each metal bird its own individual finish.
Bare Steel or Ready Rusted?
If you're buying a metal bird for yourself, watching the steel gradually change can be part of its appeal.
A newly made bare-steel bird begins with a much cleaner metallic appearance and develops its character after being placed outdoors.
For gifts, however, you may prefer the rustic appearance to have already started.
That's why we also offer a selection of Ready Rusted Metal Birds. These are the same style of steel garden birds, but we've allowed the natural weathering process to begin before they're sent out.
The amount of rust can vary — that's part of the character of naturally weathered steel — but it means the recipient receives a bird that's already developing the warm rustic finish.

Where Do Rusty Metal Birds Look Best?
One of the advantages of a natural rusty finish is how easily it works with materials already found around the garden.
On Fence Posts
Robins, wrens, blackbirds and other smaller birds look particularly natural perched on timber fence posts.
The rusty steel contrasts beautifully against both new and weathered timber, while the silhouette remains easy to recognise against foliage or open sky.
Among Trees and Timber
Spike-mounted birds can be installed into suitable tree stumps, substantial branches, fence posts and other timber garden features.
A Great Spotted Woodpecker works particularly well against the vertical surface of a tree trunk, while smaller robins and wrens can be tucked amongst branches and planting.
Around Ponds and Water Features
Bird designs associated with water can create a particularly effective feature around ponds.
A Kingfisher positioned amongst timber or planting near water creates an instantly recognisable silhouette, while a Duck Family can work beautifully alongside grasses and lower planting.
The rusty finish also complements natural stone, timber and pond-side vegetation.
Rusty Metal Birds for Smaller Gardens
Metal garden art doesn't need a large space.
Smaller designs such as a Baby Robin or Baby Wren can add a little detail to compact gardens, patios and courtyards without becoming the dominant feature.
A small bird placed amongst planting or on a timber feature often works best when it isn't immediately obvious. It becomes something you notice as you move around the garden.
Rusty Metal Birds as Garden Gifts
Metal birds make particularly good gifts for people who enjoy their garden, wildlife or a favourite bird species.
Robins are especially popular as gifts, while wrens, blue tits, blackbirds, swallows, owls, kingfishers and woodpeckers allow you to choose something that has a more personal connection to the recipient.
For gifting, our Ready Rusted collection is useful because the natural weathered appearance has already begun before the bird arrives.
They're also easy to display outdoors without needing a large garden or complicated installation.
How Long Does the Rusty Finish Take to Develop?
There isn't an exact timetable.
Bare mild steel reacts to its environment, so weathering depends on rainfall, moisture, temperature and where the bird is positioned.
The appearance will continue to evolve outdoors, which is one of the characteristics of using real mild steel rather than applying an artificial painted rust effect.
Some customers enjoy seeing that transformation happen naturally. If you'd rather start with an already weathered appearance, choose one of our Ready Rusted Metal Birds instead.
Do Rusty Metal Birds Need Maintenance?
Our standard metal birds are designed to weather naturally, so you don't need to keep removing the rust or repainting them simply because the surface changes colour.
The natural patina is part of their intended appearance.
If you specifically want to prevent the steel from rusting, it can instead be painted with a suitable metal paint. For the traditional MetalGardenArt look, however, simply allow the bare steel to weather naturally outdoors.
Made in Lancashire from 3mm Mild Steel
Our metal bird garden art is designed and manufactured by us in Lancashire, UK.
Each design is CNC plasma cut from premium 3mm S275 mild steel, then cleaned and hand-finished in our workshop before being packed and shipped.
We produce a growing collection of robins, wrens, swallows, blackbirds, blue tits, owls, kingfishers, woodpeckers and other familiar birds, with different mounting styles designed for fence posts, trees, timber features and gardens.

Rusty Metal Birds: Made to Belong in the Garden
Rusty metal birds have a way of looking naturally at home outdoors. Against timber, trees, foliage and stone, the warm tones of weathered steel complement the garden rather than competing with it.
Our metal bird garden art is CNC plasma cut from premium 3mm mild steel and hand-finished in our Lancashire workshop. Most designs are supplied in bare steel, allowing the surface to weather naturally outdoors and gradually develop its own individual rusty patina.
The collection includes familiar British garden birds such as Robins, Wrens, Blackbirds and Blue Tits, alongside distinctive designs including Swallows, Kingfishers and Great Spotted Woodpeckers. Different mounting styles allow them to be displayed on fence posts, trees, timber features and other suitable places around the garden.
Natural weathering is part of their character. As the steel changes, variations in colour and texture develop across the surface, helping each piece blend beautifully into its surroundings. In sunlight, the simple cut-steel silhouettes can also cast striking shadows against timber, walls and planting.
Metal birds also make thoughtful gifts for bird lovers and gardeners, particularly when you can choose a species with a personal meaning or connection. For anyone who prefers the weathered appearance from the start, our Ready Rusted Metal Birds have already begun developing their natural patina before they're sent out.

How Our Metal Garden Birds Are Made
Our metal garden birds start life as a sheet of 3mm S275 mild steel in our Lancashire workshop. Each design is CNC plasma cut, allowing us to produce the distinctive outlines and detailed internal cut-outs that give each bird its character.
The photograph above shows one of our bird designs being cut from the steel. Once cutting is complete, each piece is removed from the sheet, cleaned up and hand-finished by us before it's prepared for its final mounting style and packed for delivery.
CNC Cut and Hand-Finished in Lancashire
Using CNC plasma cutting gives us the accuracy needed for everything from the simple outline of a Robin or Wren to the more detailed features found in designs such as our Great Spotted Woodpecker.
The CNC machine does the cutting, but the finished product doesn't simply fall off the machine ready to sell. Each bird is individually cleaned and finished in our workshop before it leaves us.
3mm Mild Steel Made for the Outdoors
We use premium 3mm mild steel for our outdoor metal birds. It gives the finished designs a substantial feel while allowing the finer details of each silhouette to be retained.
Our standard birds are supplied in bare steel and are intended to weather naturally outdoors. Over time, exposure to the elements creates the rusty patina that gives MetalGardenArt pieces their characteristic appearance.
From cutting the steel to finishing the individual bird, the process takes place here in Lancashire — creating UK-made metal bird garden art that's designed to become part of the garden rather than simply sit in it.
Versatility in Placement: Displaying Your Metal Birds
Mini Robin Twig
One of the easiest ways to make metal bird art look natural is to place it somewhere a real garden bird might catch your eye. A Robin perched on a fence post, a Woodpecker against a tree or a smaller bird tucked amongst branches can add character without making the garden feel over-decorated.
Our different designs use mounting styles suited to different parts of the garden, including fence post toppers, tree and timber spikes, twig designs and lawn-mounted pieces. This makes it easy to find a bird that works with the space you already have rather than having to create a dedicated display for it.
Smaller pieces such as our Mini Robin Twig work particularly well amongst established planting, on trees or around natural timber features. Their rusty finish gradually blends with bark, foliage and weathered wood while the silhouette remains instantly recognisable.
Sometimes the best position isn't the most obvious one. A metal bird partly surrounded by planting can become a small detail to discover as you move around the garden.
Creating Natural Displays with Metal Bird Art
Rusty metal works particularly well alongside materials already found outdoors. Weathered timber, stone, brick, terracotta and established planting all complement the warm brown and orange tones that develop as bare mild steel naturally rusts.
Rather than displaying every piece in isolation, metal birds can become part of an existing garden feature. A bird amongst climbing plants, attached to an old timber post or positioned near a tree can look as though it has gradually become part of the garden itself.
Some designs can also add a practical element. Our Robin & Baby Chick Bird Feeder Hanger, for example, combines decorative metal bird art with a hanging point for a suitable bird feeder, creating an attractive feature amongst trees and planting.
Don't worry about trying to make everything match perfectly. Natural materials, changing foliage and the evolving rusty surface of the steel are what give these displays their character. As the seasons change, the same metal bird can look completely different against spring growth, summer flowers or autumn leaves
Installing and Caring for Your Metal Garden Birds
Different metal bird designs are made for different locations around the garden, so installation depends on the mounting style you choose.
Fence post toppers are designed to sit on suitable timber posts, while tree and timber spike designs are pushed into suitable wood. Our lawn-mounted pieces use ground spikes that can be positioned directly into suitable soil or grass.
Whichever style you choose, take a moment to find a position where the bird is secure and its silhouette can be appreciated against the surrounding garden.
Caring for the Natural Rust Finish
Our standard outdoor metal birds are supplied in bare mild steel and are intended to rust naturally. Rain, moisture and changing weather conditions gradually create the warm orange and brown patina that gives each piece its individual character.
There's no need to remove this rust or apply a protective coating if you want the traditional MetalGardenArt finish. The changing surface is part of the design.
If you prefer to prevent further weathering, the steel can instead be prepared and coated with a suitable exterior metal paint or finish.
